My pet rock, a picture of Charlie my dog, my motorcycle racing trophy … these are just a few of the things I brought to to school for Show and Tell. I excitedly displayed the item and told the story associated -- how I bought my pet rock with money I had earned and saved making it super special to me; how I tried to tie Charlie my dog to a chair to “teach” him reading; how I really won the racing trophy because there were only 2 racers in my age group and I won 2nd place. See, the visual alone didn’t tell the story, but the story would not have been as engaging without showing the item. Good communication and training involve showing and telling. Using pictures, models, graphic organizers, even sticky notes can help show your ideas, but you must also tell your ideas with your own words. etc Strategies believes that by incorporating Show and Tell into client education, employee training, leadership development, and team building, these communication and learning experiences can be more effective and successful.
Learning your first words; learning how to tie your shoes; learning to read and write; learning to ride a bike or drive a car; learning science and math and history ...
The learning experiences of your life all involve basic communication strategies and teaching techniques. Learning to say “mama” or “dada” involved repetition and reward; learning to tie your shoes involved an analogy with rabbits, trees, and holes in the ground; learning to read and write involved modeling of behaviors needed for success; learning to ride a bike or drive a car involved hands-on experience with guidance and coaching; and learning science and math and history involved defining and applying vocabulary and skills.
These communication strategies and teaching techniques helped you to learn and grow and develop into the adult you are today. So why do businesses and organizations try to help you learn and grow and develop without using these same strategies and techniques? Why are “adult” learners expected to learn any differently? Aren’t “adult” learners just learners? Shouldn’t these proven communication strategies and teaching techniques be used in ALL learning experiences with ALL learners?
